Interesting resources to add new features to WordPress

In this post I want to share with you some interesting resources for WordPress, answering to all my readers which use it for their blog and frequently asked me some questions about several topic about this blog platform.

In particular this post suggests how to transform WordPress in a social community or an e-commerce store, how to display your social feeds in your page (something like aFriendFeed clone...) and how to improve your comments section using threaded comments.


Transform WordPress in a social community platform with ByddyPress BuddyPress will transform an installation of WordPress MU into a social network platform. BuddyPress is essentially a set of WordPress MU (multi-user) specific plugins and each plugin component adds a distinct feature to BuddyPress and only handles functionality for that specific component (for example, private messaging). BuddyPress also has a core plugin that all other plugins require, it contains shared functions and performs the basic modifications to the WordPress MU interface.

Lifestream your social feeds
David Cramer's Lifestream it's an interesting plugin which displays your social feeds and photos much like you would see it on many of the social networking sites. It's a "FriendFeed clone" for your WordPress based website. Lifestram supports unlimited number of feeds, stores entire feed history, not just the last week or two, it's extendable via a base PHP class and easily customizable using stylesheets.

Threaded comments in WordPress 2.7
If you use WordPress 2.7 you have the ability to use threaded comments on your pages. Chris Harrison wrote an interesting post about hot to make your comment. This is the result:



My friend Chris Coyer use it in css-tricks.com comments system and for a little extra functionality he use the WMD editor a simple lightweight HTML editor for blog comments, which allows easy to add links, bold, italic and other suff. WMD editor alsoprovides the live comment preview. If you are a WordPress theme designer take a look at this interesting post about which give you some suggestions to support all WordPress 2.7 enanchements in your themes. Instead, if you use an older WordPress version take a look at the popular Brian Meidell’s Threaded Comments plug-in to enable threaded comments on your posts.

Edit comment for limited time
WP Ajax Edit Comments is a cool Plugin for WordPress users which allows your readers to edit their comments for a limited time. You can specify comment time, anonymous or logged-in user options.

WordPress for e-commerce
If you want to use WordPress for an e-commerce website, my friend Philip Beel in my previous post about 8 CMS for e-commerce website suggested to use WP e-Commerce, a great solution to enable e-commerce features on your WordPress based website. Installation it's very simple and requires just some minutes. You simply download the plugin, copy it to your Plugins folder and activate it via your admin panel. You can easy accept payments online with Google Checkout, Paypal, Authorize.net, Payment Express and many other trusted payment processors.

Social bookmarking options
Sociable is a WordPress plugin which adds automatically and easy links to your favorite social bookmarking sites on your posts, pages and in your RSS feed. You can choose from 99 different social bookmarking sites just with a click.
Another interesting plugin is I Love Social Bookmarking is a simple WordPress that allows your readers to submit your content to social media services via a clutter-free drop-down list of attractive icons.
